October 28, 1886: The Statue of Liberty Is Dedicated
On this day in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor by President Grover Cleveland. The monument was a gift from the people of France commemorating France’s international relationship with the of the United States.
Formally known as “Liberty Enlightening the World,” the Statue of Liberty is regarded by many as a universal symbol of freedom and hope for generations of families immigrating to the U.S.
